Zelma "Jane" Piercy Obituary

Zelma Jane Piercy, 80, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt went home to be with the Lord on Friday, January 5, 2024.

Jane was born in Akron, Ohio, to Emery and Marquarte Waters on January 19, 1943.  She met the love of her life, Harold, as a teenager at her church youth group and was fond of saying “I chased him until he caught me!”  After graduating high school and marrying her sweetheart, she joined him in Kentucky while he served in the U.S. Army. When Harold completed his service, the couple returned to Akron where they built a home and raised three daughters.

Jane was committed to her Christian faith in multiple ways.  When her children were young, she hosted in-home Five-Day Clubs sponsored by Child Evangelism Fellowship.  She was active at Riverside Alliance Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher and nursery volunteer for many years.  Jane’s career choices also evidenced her commitment to the Lord.  When given the opportunity, she took a job at Chapel Hill Christian School, where she worked for 32 years. After retirement, she spent many more enjoyable times with her family and Harold, to whom she was married for 60 years.

Jane ensured that her children grew up in a faith-based community, involving them in both church activities and Christian education at Chapel Hill Christian School and Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy.  She and Harold spent many days and nights escorting their girls to choir and band concerts during those busy school years.  They also enjoyed accompanying their daughter, Brenda, and the church Bible quizzing team to monthly quiz meets even traveling out of state for two international championships.

The simple pleasures in life brought great joy to Jane.  She loved cooking meals for her family, baking “yummy” pies and cookies from cherished family recipes, canning home-grown garden vegetables with Harold, and making delicious holiday treats and chocolate candies to give to family and friends.  At Christmas time especially, candy making was something she shared with her mother, her daughters, and eventually her granddaughter.  Her family was her greatest treasure.  She also enjoyed sewing and crocheting.  Jane liked to travel as well.  One of her favorite adventures was driving with her husband across the northern states to the west coast to join her sister and brother-in-law on a cruise to Alaska.  She and Harold also made frequent trips to the Baltimore-Washington DC area after their daughter, Liane, relocated there.

With the birth of her granddaughter, Nicole, Jane became a loving grandmother and babysitter, often for overnight stays when her daughter Darlene worked nightshift as a nurse.  Jane was very fond of reading books and singing songs from her own childhood to her only grandchild.  And again, with the birth of her great grandchildren, Braylon and Bria, she enjoyed spending as much time with them as possible, even giving up her sunroom to become their playroom.

Jane is survived by her husband, three daughters, granddaughter, and two great grandchildren, as well as her younger sister Annetta Mong.  She was preceded in death by her parents, older brother Frederick “Bud” Waters, and brother-in-law William “Bill” Mong.

Those who wish to remember and celebrate her life are welcome to join the family Wednesday, January 10, 5:00 – 7:00 pm for calling hours at Prentice Funeral Home in Kenmore.  A funeral service will be held, also at the funeral home at 11:00 am on Thursday, January 11, with internment at Greenlawn Memorial Park.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at or to Riverside Alliance Church (, 2433 South Main Street, Akron, OH 44319.
