Eighty-six years in Kenmore! Born in Kenmore; died April 18, 2022 at home; grew up on Marie Ave; went to Margaret Park School and Kenmore High School. Always sports minded, he played football for Kenmore High; graduated in 1953.
Married to Patricia Burke in 1953. They raised their children (Tim, Tom, Lisa and David) in Kenmore. Richard coached his boys in baseball and football.
Being very civic minded, Richard was almost always involved in something helping the Kenmore Community (especially Kenmore Kiwanis). At times he was known as the “Mayor of Kenmore”! He was a firefighter with the Akron Fire Department for 33 years – retiring out of Station #10 in Kenmore.
In 1985, Richard married Patricia Shankland. He moved into being a stepfather to her four boys (Shane, Jason, Jody and Eric). Three were still living at home. They bought a house (yep!) in Kenmore where they (Dick & Pat) still live.
Richard was a member of Kenmore Kiwanis, Barberton Al-Anon, played cards at the Barberton Moose, taught at the YMCA.
His favorite place to vacation with Pat #2 was the island of Saint Martin. They made many good friends there over the years – both island people and other people from the US. We visited all 48 states in our RV (or different RV’s!). Such adventures we had!
Richard was pre-deceased by his parents Richard & Ruth, brother Nathan, daughter Lisa, son Tom, first wife Patricia (Jules), brother-in-law John McKenzie.
Survived by wife of 38 years, Patricia, sons Tim (Holly) and David; step sons Shane, Jason (Kelly), Jody (Jenny), Eric; sister-in-law Pam McKenzie.
Grandchildren – Marcus, Charis (Jeff), Hannah (Mike), Adam (LaDawn), Josh (Abbie), Jerni, Claira and Lorelei. Three great grands (#4 in Oct).
Rest in peace, Baby. I’ll love you forever.
