Milton D. "Mel" Reed 1926 - 2015 Milton D. "Mel" Reed, 88 passed away February 10, 2015. Mel was a retired teacher from Maplewood JVS. He was a WWII Veteran of the 109th Infantry, past national commander of the Army and Navy Union USA and past Department of Ohio commander of the Army and Navy Union. He was inducted into the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame in 2000. Mel was also a former member of the Akron Boxers Trainers Association and matchmaker for the local Golden Gloves boxing competition. Mel is preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Mary Reed; wife, Mary Jane Reed; granddaughter, Mary Reed; 6 brothers and two sisters; and special friend Jutta Patton. He is survived by his children Deborah Cox, Kathleen Reed (Larry), Bud Reed (Beth), David Reed (Gariann) and Suzanne McCarthy; grandchildren James Rice (Donna), Jason Rice (Nicole), Simone Stewart (Trevor), Joshua Krutowsky, Christina Tylka (John), Tera Rockich (Adam), Nicole Hayes (Justin),and Jennifer James (Glenn); 13 great-grandchildren and sister Audrey Thomas. Memorial service will be held TODAY at 5 p.m. at the Prentice Funeral Home, 1154 Kenmore Blvd. followed by military honors by VFW Post 1089. Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. Donations, if desired may be made to Wounded Warriors.
