AKRON -- Karla M. Brookes, 90, passed away December 6, 2015. Born August 21, 1925, Karla was a lifelong resident of Kenmore. Karla worked as a secretary for many years at Firestone Tire & Rubber in their Steel Products and Defense Products divisions. She was a member of Park United Methodist Church and Kenmore Historical Society; belonged to Firestone Park AARP and Order of the Eastern Star. An avid Ohio State Buckeyes fan, she also enjoyed traveling, dancing, hiking, watching/feeding birds in her yard, and gardening. She received numerous "Beautification" awards from the City of Akron for her flower gardens. She was preceded in death by her parents, Delbert and Ruth Tice and her beloved fiancé, Lyle Swaebly. She is survived by children, Sandra Weaver and Todd Brookes (fiancée Amber McDaniel); grandchildren, Chad Weaver and Derek (Kristen) Weaver; and her great-grandchildren, Michael, Kyle, Alix, and Hayden. Funeral service will be held Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at the Prentice Funeral Home, 1154 Kenmore Blvd., officiated by Dr. Linda Somerville, with burial at Greenlawn Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of service. Donations may be made to the Summit Metro Parks Foundation or Park United Methodist Church.
